Splinters’ Theatre Group’s Footloose The Musical – 16 September 2024, University Drama Studio
Review by Ellie Needham.
“I had the pleasure of attending a vibrant and energetic production of Footloose the Musical, performed by Splinters Theatre Group. This uplifting show had the audience tapping their feet and clapping along as the cast brought the story to life.
Josh, who played Ren McCormack, gave a standout triple-threat performance, seamlessly blending his singing, dancing and acting. In the role of Ariel was Jessica. Her dancing and singing abilities perfectly suited the character. I especially loved her harmonies with Josh during Almost Paradise – a definite standout moment of the evening, as their voices blended beautifully.
Equally impressive was Daniel as Chuck, whose strong vocals and convincing portrayal made the character truly come to life on stage. Lewis, playing the lovable Willard, had great comedic timing and it was obvious he had spent time building the characterisation of Willard’s quirky personality. His moments on stage were a definite highlight!
The harmonies throughout the show were good, with Somebody’s Eyes being a prime example of how well the cast worked together vocally. The ensemble also impressed, particularly during a creative scene change where they flipped and performed tricks across the stage as they removed furniture—a clever touch that added a fun layer to the transition.
The set design was minimalist, which at times was effective, but in some moments, it may have caused confusion for audience members who were unfamiliar with the show. For example, it wasn’t always clear when the action had shifted from inside the Moore house to outside. However, the simplicity allowed the talented cast to shine and the action flowed smoothly overall.
The costumes were modern and fitting for the production. I did feel that some additional costumes to distinguish the diner workers could have helped set the scene more clearly, but overall, the styling was relevant and added to the performance’s contemporary feel.
In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this production of Footloose! From the spirited performances to the wonderful harmonies, it’s a show packed with energy. Thank you for the opportunity to review this performance. Keep up the incredible energy throughout the rest of the week, as audiences are sure to enjoy it!”
